Movin' On North

Monday, August 8, 2016

After spotting the approaching severe storm cell from 30th Avenue near US Highway 30 in SE Benton County, Iowa for about 15 minutes, it was time to pack up and continue north on 30th Avenue to stay with the storm, which was exhibiting a slight northeast track. The cell, part of an advancing cold front, was being energized by gobbling up the 84 degree temps, 79 degree dew points and 84% humidities in front of it. The above image, captured at 5:45 pm CDT, Thursday, August 4, 2016,  shows my next brief spotting position from the driveway of a cellphone tower site, a quarter mile north of US30. The image looks west at the churning midsection of the storm, now about 19 miles distant.

Looking northwest at the leading edge of the storm from this spot a minute later. The base (behind the left and middle tree) is showing a striated appearance.

5:52 pm. On the move again north on 30th Avenue, .4-mile north of County Road E44 and about 2.1 west of Atkins, Iowa. The most intense part of the storm is now located about 13 miles to the northwest, or just southeast of the town of Garrison. Base striation very evident now. Nikon D7200 DSLR camera.
