August 2 Morning Storm Action

Tuesday, August 2, 2022

Storms began rolling through the southern part of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area after 4:00 am on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, tracking in a southeasterly direction. By 5:30 am the system reached neighboring Cedar County and had again gone severe-warned (it was previously severe-warned just west of Linn County in Benton County from 4:00-4:35 am). The storm featured "spider" CC lightning at its lower base, as well as CG lightning and prominent mammatus clouds, reflecting beautifully in the gathering light of the rising sun. The above image, captured at 5:33 am, looks southeast from 33rd Avenue at 12th Street SW in Cedar Rapids. The severe warned area is to the far right. iPhone 11 camera.
