Space X Satellite Train

Wednesday, April 1, 2020

Out to photograph the close triangle formation of the moon, planet Venus and Pleiades star cluster in the west sky on Saturday evening, March 28, 2020, I got more for my money. Earlier severe weather had moved out of the area by late evening, leaving clear skies in its wake. As I was setting up for the shot, a large number of satellites began to emerge from under the celestial event and move west-to-east, evenly spaced (no pun intended). Knowing virtually nothing about the Space X Starlink "satellite train," I humorously wondered if this was the beginning of a war of the worlds scenario. The duration from the time they first appeared to me and their conclusion was from about 8:20-8:35 pm CDT. The image above, captured near Bowman Woods Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a 13-second exposure at f/4, ISO 400 and 27mm focal length. The satellite closest to the moon is flaring as it appears in the west. The constellation Taurus can be seen at upper left. I unfortunately missed capturing a very bright and chance meteor streak in the same area around this time, in a level trajectory moving the opposite direction. Nikon D7200 DSLR camera.
