Auto Freeze

Ice warnings were posted for Cedar Rapids, Iowa during the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 22, 2023. The following images show the condition of my vehicle before turning home from work later that afternoon. Ice coatings in the local area were at least a quarter inch.

While icy conditions closed schools and workplaces, and made driving extremely treacherous, this storm was not a major damaging event locally. What was extreme was 1-2 feet of snow in regions farther north of Cedar Rapids, into the state of Minnesota. iPhone 11 camera.

Heavy on the Snow

With temperatures around 34 degrees F, it started out as heavy rain during the early morning hours of Thursday, February 9, 2023 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but by about 5:30 am a smattering of snowflakes began mixing with the rain. By 6:30 am the rain had converted to a heavy, wet snow with temperatures now around freezing. The image above looks northwest from 33rd Avenue at 12th Street SW in Cedar Rapids at 6:52 am. By afternoon, the snow event was done, leaving 2-3 inches in the metro area. iPhone 11 camera.
