Impressive Looking, But Not Severe

Monday, July 8, 2019

The rumble of thunder from inside one's house when there seems to be nothing but sunshine all around is always a cause to check out the outdoors. Cause: isolated small storm cells were popping up in various locations in eastern Iowa during the afternoon/evening of Tuesday, July 2, 2019. This was my view (above) as I ventured out into Bowman Woods Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa around 6:04 pm CDT. The storm was located about 16 miles to my northwest--in the Urbana, Iowa area in northeastern Benton County. Though never severe warned, this storm packed lightning and impressive updrafts--with echo tops reaching over 50,000 feet around 6:10 pm!

Radarscope frame capture corresponding to 6:12 pm. The storm cell's motion is indicated by white arrows. My location was the blue target icon.
