Next Spot Stop--With CGs
Tuesday, August 9, 2016
Spotting stop number three- this time at 70th Street (County Road 199), about .2-mile west of 30th Avenue in eastern Benton County, Iowa. Time was just after 6:00 pm CDT, Thursday, August 4, 2016. The above image is a panorama of the storm's elongated base, with the image stretching from the west sky (left) to the north.
Closer view of the northern portion of the storm's base at the same time. Inside the shelf cloud is high precipitation--and lightning.
This video frame screen capture (above) shows dangerous CG lightning emanating from the storm. There was limited if any lightning activity over my head, but I took no chances and conducted my photography crouched in a low profile. The most intense part of the storm at this moment was about 20 miles to the northwest, in the Vinton area, as illustrated in the radar screen capture image below. Black arrows show storm movement, white arrow my camera's line of sight toward the storm and the target icon my spotting position. Nikon D7200 DSLR camera.
